Hello again, everyone! Apologies for promising an issue last weekend and then promptly not publishing an issue. The last ten days or so have been a whirlwind of professional and personal nonsense, and as my Strava will show you, I haven’t done much of anything noteworthy lately. Whoopsie!
On the upside, my shirking has given the rest of y’all plenty of time to run some crazy races. Like, a lot of crazy races. So many that I think I may need to mix up the format of the usual newsletter. Special thanks, per usual, to Beau Barber for being the ultimate result-wrangler. Here goes nothin!
60m
It’s already happened, y’all. Wasting NO time this indoor season, Tyler Klein of Illinois ran 6.96 at the Wisconsin Badger Midwest Invite for a new club lead. That, to my knowledge, is the first club sub-7 of the year, though not his fastest of the season (Klein ran 6.93 back in December). Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, Moses Tonade and Garrin Alexander of Penn State ran 7.16 and 7.18, respectively. PSU’s Isabella Coyler ran 8.45 at the same meet.
300m
Not to be outdone (even by himself), Tyler Klein set a new club record in the 300m, finishing with a startlingly quick 34.66. Wisconsin TC runner Jordan Ranum wasn’t too far behind, running 36.16
800m
Kate Meinicke of Michigan came out swinging last Saturday, running 2:38.19 at the Doug Hansen Open. Her teammate Kelsey Francis wasn’t too far behind, finishing in 2:41. Freshmen James Harrison and Javier Casella, also of Michigan, ran 2:01.20 and 2:01.99, respectively. At the Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge, UNC’s Lyann Le ran 2:44, and Abby Oliver of Penn State ran 2:43 at the River Hawk Invite. Elsewhere, Bradley Lawrence of Illinois ran 2:03 for the 800m, and as if that wasn’t impressive enough, he had the nerve to do it after running 4:58 in the mile.
Mile
There were some MAJOR fireworks in the mile in the last few weeks, especially on the men’s side. Alden Roy of Oregon State ran 4:25 in the mile, and told me (rather ominously, I might add), to “get ready for a club runner sub 8:30 3000.” Consider my eyes peeled! Meanwhile, in Michigan, Ian Petruska of Western Michigan ran 4:21 at the GVSU Bob Eubanks Invitational. Elsewhere in the Mitten State, MRun freshman Ben Deguire ran 4:19.36! Something tells me Deguire’s a name we’ll be hearing several more times between now and Nats. Though he was the only MRunner under 4:20 at the meet, he was one of 5 under 4:30.
3000m
The 3000m is one of my favorite parts of the indoor season, and in this it seems I’m not alone. MRun always has some heavy hitters in the 3k, but last Saturday was anything but an exception. Katelyn King ran a killer 10:37, putting her second in the league for the season (just between her teammates Anna Nagelhout and Ashley Heidenrich from a few weeks ago). On the fellas’ side, Andrew Quaal just edged out Zach Duval, running 8:38.77 to Duval’s 8:39.14 for the 2 fastest club 3ks of the season so far.
A Singlet Update
Good news — they’re here! I intend to mail them out ASAP, but I will be field testing them on Sunday for a mile race at Christopher Newport. If any of y’all are going to be at the Vince Brown Invite and would rather recieve an in-person delivery, let me know! They feel fantastic, the colors look lovely, and they don’t fit tightly, which were my main concerns. Pontoon’s an Australian company, and the Aussies are a hearty bunch, so I figured they wouldn’t be too tight, but I was thrilled to try mine on and not feel like I was running in a sausage casing.
One last thing…
Tomorrow, Saturday the 28th, marks 1 year since Reasonably Speedy officially launched. Thank you to everyone who’s shared the newsletter or reposted something on Instagram — the extent to which this has already grown really kind of boggles my mind somehow. I assumed I’d be writing this for 20, maybe 30 people. Now there’s folks planning to race in Reasonably Speedy TC singlets. Thanks again y’all. I’m still figuring out how balance this thing with, ya know, “having 2 jobs” and stuff, but knowing people read it and actually enjoy it has been huge for keeping me (mostly) accountable. As I write this, we’re sitting at 218 newsletter subscribers. I’m shooting for 500 by this time 2024.
As always, Club or Die, D4 Forever, and may your runs always be speedy (within reason).
if this man actually runs sub 8:30 in the 3k that would be wild
