Lets not also forget the Track MVPs and Field MVPs. NIRCA decided to not do one this year but ya boy crunched the numbers.
If you score relays as the relay score divided by 4 for each person (i.e. if a relay won and got 10 points, then each athlete got 2.5 points) then our Track MVPs are
Men: Tyler Klein (Illinois) - 28.5 points
Women: Ari Afolabi (Illinois) - 30.5 points
Without Relays its still the same two people, but with slightly smaller scores
Men: Tyler Klein (Illinois) - 26 points
Women: Ari Afolabi (Illinois) - 28 points
Now if you count relays with the FULL score (i.e. if a relay wins, you give each individual athlete 10 points) then we get a slight change-up
Men: Tyler Klein (Illinois) - 36 points
Women: Katherine Vande Pol (Illinois) - 43 points
Field is much easier to decide since they don't have relays :D
For Field MVP you have
Women: Sarah Phillips (Virginia Tech) - 22 points all from jumps (moment of silence for her shins)
For Men it is a tie between two throwers Jacob O'Reilley of UConn and Henry Sheppard of Maryland. Jacob won shotput and Henry got second, but they traded places in discus to have an even score of 18 by the end of it all.
Here is the spreadsheet detailing those scores as well! Along with the correct team scores (since only the highest placing relay should have placed)
Thanks for the great article. As your story covers in great detail, my son Aidan McCarthy ran very well at Nationals, but I too had to miss it because I was with Aidan’s younger brother who was playing in a soccer tournament in Williamsburg, VA. Your description of events made me feel like I was there. Thanks for covering all the highlights with a sense of humor.
i’m flattered to receive a mention in this article 🥰

As someone from illinois, Im definitely gonna tease the distance runners with “we dont need them anyways” lol
I hope I didn’t just make some enemies!
